Technically I suppose we were the visitors, but we had never seen a snapping turtle in these woods before, so he is the visitor.
It would have been nice to have a person in the picture, just to give a sense of proportion. This turtle was BIG. So big, in fact, that there was no way I was going to risk my girls getting bitten by it while I took a picture. I guess you'll just have to take my word for it, it was big.

Oh my gosh! You saw this near your house? Wow. I thought they were supposed to live in the water, but maybe I'm wrong. I remember swimming in a lake and a snapping turtle swam right past me. It was so scary. You're right, they are BIG! Such great pictures btw!

The nature trails behind our house are full of swampy areas (there is a creek that flows through, hence all the mosquitoes) so maybe this is why he was lurking about. I think the fact that he has flora growing on his head is pretty weird...the shell I get, but on his head?
